Property Damage Guide · By Tomas Robirosa, Esq.
Hurricane Isaias made landfall near Destin on October 9 as a Category 2 storm, flooding Okaloosa County, scattering debris across Pensacola and leaving hundreds of thousands of homes and businesses without power. Here is how to protect your home and your storm damage insurance claim.
If your home has Hurricane Isaias damage, what you do in the first days can make or break your storm damage insurance claim. Your policy gives you rights, and it also gives you duties. This guide explains both, with practical steps to prevent more damage and document everything. This article is general information, not legal advice.
Isaias, the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season, came ashore near Destin on the night of October 9 as a Category 2 hurricane, then moved north into Alabama. News reports describe:
Whether your home was hit by Isaias or by the next storm (hurricane season runs through November 30), the rules for a storm damage insurance claim are the same. Insurers look closely at what the homeowner did after the storm.
Most Florida homeowners policies include a section called "Duties After Loss." The exact wording depends on your policy, so read yours, but these duties are common:
Failing to meet these duties can give the insurer a reason to reduce or deny part of a hurricane damage claim, so treat them seriously.
Your policy generally expects you to take reasonable steps to stop the damage from getting worse. The Florida Department of Financial Services also tells homeowners to make emergency repairs to prevent further damage and to keep receipts. Practical examples:
Safety comes first. Stay away from downed power lines, never run a generator indoors or in a garage, and do not climb on a wet or damaged roof.
Good documentation is the backbone of a storm damage insurance claim. Before you clean up or throw anything away:
Back up your photos and documents to the cloud or email them to yourself, in case your phone is lost or damaged.
Under section 627.70132, Florida Statutes, notice of a new or reopened property claim generally must be given within one year after the date of loss, and a supplemental claim generally within 18 months. For a hurricane, the date of loss is generally the date the hurricane made landfall. Every case is different, so speak with an attorney to confirm the deadline that applies to you.
Florida law also sets timelines for insurers. Under section 627.70131, Florida Statutes, insurers generally must acknowledge a claim within 7 days and pay or deny it within 60 days after receiving notice, with some exceptions. Every case is different, so speak with an attorney to confirm the deadline that applies to you.
Remember your hurricane deductible, which is shown on your policy's declarations page and is usually higher than your regular deductible. For more on coverage, see our guide on what a hurricane damage insurance claim covers.

As a physical therapist, I’ve had the opportunity to work with Robirosa Accident & Injury Law while treating patients recovering from injuries. Their team has always been professional, responsive, and genuinely focused on making sure their clients receive the care they need. From a healthcare provider’s perspective, communication and coordination can make a huge difference in these cases, and their team does a great job staying involved without interfering with the clinical process. It’s clear they care about their clients as people, not just as cases. I would highly recommend Robirosa Accident & Injury Law to anyone looking for an injury attorney who is professional, accessible, and committed to helping their clients through the recovery process.Posted on Google![]()
